I am rejoining the forum after a long time of inactivity. I was stationed at Don Muang in the late sixties. I lived in Bangkok most of the time. I resided at Tak Lea for one month. I ENJOYED MY TIME IN Thailand. Hope to revisit in the future. I have had some health problems that have prevented me from coming in the past. I know it has been a long time, but if there are any former American military or Thai Guard that were stationed in that era. I would like to converse with them. I can speak, read and write a little Thai and Issan David in West Tennessee

Welcome back, David. Glad to have you here. I was also in Thailand during that period of time, although not with the military. I do remember, however, when taking the bus from Don Muang Airport to Bangkok, one passed through green rice fields. Don Muang was then out in the country, connected to Bangkok by a raised, two lane blacktop road.

Hope you are doing better with your health and that you will have a chance to revisit Thailand.

I was there (at Khorat) from the summer of 1967 to the spring of '69. I made a fetish of Thai, teaching myself all the while, and was able in time to write and receive back type-written replies in Thai from certain business or government offices.
I was in the enlisted Air Force, working in the maintenance function. Mostly it was aircraft sheet metal that occupied me during that period.

I have written several non-fiction books. I am currently working on a book based on my experience in Thailand.

We don't actually use Thai much on this site, there are a few brave souls who attempt to write as they speak but if it is understandable there is no one capable or willing to polish or even discuss the content. Unfortunately questions are taken as criticism so unless you can change that you won't advance much on the speaking side here.

I realize the Thailand that I left in my youth is not anywhere the same Thailand today. I am not the same person at age 69. I am interested in travelling to Thailand, perhaps northern Thailand.

It is certainly true as Heraclitus said that you cannot step in the same river twice: you are not the same person and the river is not the same river. Enjoy what you can and do not rue what you cannot.
