Site Superscripts

Postby DeftlySpun » Mon Dec 12, 2011 4:50 pm

Hello,

I am a Christian missionary living in Thailand. I love the people here and want to be able to communicate clearly with them. I see learning Thai as a new adventure and am very excited to find this site. To those who have put in the time and effort to make it what it is - Thank you very much.

I see Thai words are accompanied by super scripted letters on the site. An H or M or I. I can not find an explanation as to what these signify. Can anyone please enlighten me?

And the purple star?

Also, thought it kind of fun that I entered ศาลาชุมนุม into the site dictionary and got, "Sorry, there were no results for: [Thai] [begins with] ศาลาชุมนุม" So can someone tell me what the name of this site "ศาลาชุมนุม" is?

Thanks.

It just hit me I may have posted these questions in the wrong area of the forum. If that is the case someone please fill free to square me away.

thai is a tonal language, there are 5 tones:

middle
low
falling
high
rising

m - l - f - h - r

that should hopefully answer your superscript question

ศาลาชุมนุม is a compound word, it's always hard to figure out the meaning of compound words in dictionary isn't it?

ศาลาชุมนุม
ศาล meeting hall (in a temple)
ชุมนุม to gather together; to muster; to congregate; to assemble; to congress

I think it means nothing else than: Forum

welcome to the forum :)

Would the term "เวทีสนทนา" be preferable to "ศาลาชุมนุม"?

From the dictionary it looks like "เวทีสนทนา" or the transcription "ฟอรั่ม" should be considered. We need a Thai response.

For goodness sake none of you should allow me to fool you into believing I know what I'm talking about but, from a little research I've done it appears "เวทีสนทนา" refers to the act of conversing on a stage or platform.

"ศาลาชุมนุม" refers to a group gathered at a location. A place where people are gathered, an assembly in a meeting hall.
