Second Attempt To Learn Thai

Postby JF80 » Sat Mar 17, 2012 1:44 pm

I've been in Thailand about 2.5 years now and when I first came I tried to learn Thai, having lessons and doing self study but then gave up because it was too hard and everyone speaks English so no need for it.

Now I'm giving it another go and am learning to read alongside speaking and understanding.

The initial enthusiasm has worn off already but am determined to get somewhere this time!

Cheers.

Well done JF80. Reading is the key to long term learning. Crack the alphabet and a whole new world opens up especially as you live here. You can start reading signs, menus, adverts, etc. Even though you might not understand much the feeling when you do read a word and understand it is worth the effort of learning. If you have any questions about learning the alphabet feel free to drop me a pm.

Hi Toffeeman. Thanks for the message. I have learnt the alphabet and the vowels but am now faced with learning the tone rules!

I didn't think I could learn all the consonants and vowels but I did but now I see all the tones rules I have no idea how I can learn them all AND be able to apply then as I try to read.

You are right, learning to read is good and once you can start to read signs and things around you it makes it all worthwhile, perhaps more so than being able to understand people speaking.

Will crack on with the tone rules though.

You might like to use school books. I have saved a reply which I made to this post which most here would find boring, I can send it to you if you are interested.
