เหมือนกับ vs หมือนกัน

Postby CrashTestDummy » Thu Oct 13, 2016 8:56 am

Greetings,

Can someone please explain the usage of เหมือนกับ vs หมือนกัน? I can't seem to grasp the difference, yet I understand they're not interchangable. Thanks!

"เหมือนกัน" has two usages. First, it is an adjective indicating that two things are not the same. Second, it is used as an adverb meaning "too", "likewise" or "as well":

คิดถึงเหมือนกัน
I miss you too.

ถนนไม่มีคนพลุกพล่าน แต่มีแผงลอยหรือเสื่อแบกะดินอยู่ทุกช่วงเสาไฟฟ้า ขายเครื่องรางเหมือนกันทุกเจ้า
The streets were not very crowded but shopping stalls or itinerant peddlers displaying their wares on woven mats were set up between each electric pole. Every vendor sold the same amulets.

The phrase "เหมือนกับ", on the other hand, is a preposition which must be followed by an object. The meaning is "the same as" or "similar to."

เป็นบ้านก่ออิฐแดงเหมือนกับบ้านส่วนใหญ่ในหมู่บ้านแห่งนี้
The house is built out of red bricks like most of the houses in this village.

ขาดมือถือเหมือนกับคนทุพพลภาพ
If I) do not have my cell phone, I feel as if I am disabled.
