What is the classifier for Elephant? Why?

What is the classifier for ช้าง chaangH 'elephant'? I just don't believe that this was once stipulated by the King.

I know it sounds weird, but the classifier for elephant is actually เชือก (cheauk). Don't know why.

There are three classifiers for elephants.

Domestic elephant - เชือก (it's because when people brought wild elephant out of the jungle, they tied it with 'rope', hence the classifier of it has been changed to 'เชือก')

Wild elephant - ตัว (the same as the classifier for any animal)

Royal elephant - ช้าง (it's like giving a status for these elephants)

Hi, you mentioned:
เขามีช้าว 3 ตัว ตัว is for all animal and for all that got 2 arm and or 2 leg but not
human (คน)

---Are you sure? Never used fot human? Not even for two little naughty and noisy kids running about? I doubt about it.

Thanks, Nan. I just wanted to elicit the discussion of เชือก, which is the cultural aspect of elephant: how you look at it. But for ช้าง, can we say ผม มี ช้าง 3 ช้าง phohmR meeM chaangH saamR chaangH? Then it is another example of 'cognate classifier' with the proceding noun or prefix.

No, you can't. The classifier 'ช้าง' is only used for 'royal elephant'. Ex. ช้างหลวง 2 ช้าง

You can say "ผมมีช้าง 3 เชือก" only, because I don't think you can own wild elephant. :D

But surely it's only a criminal offence (or a lie), not a grammatical offence!
