I am trying to understand how Thais say something is happening now, i.e., the equivalent of "-ing" in English as I am seeing two different ways that seem to accomplish this.

I see you can use กำลัง to bring something like "to read" into "in the process of reading":
กำลังอ่าน

I also see อยู่ used for a similar purpose, for example to bring "to stand" to be "standing":
ยืนอยู่

Sometimes even both in the same sentence:
เขากำลังอ่านหนังสืออยู่

So my question is, what is the difference between กำลัง and the auxiliary use of อยู่? Why does this sentence in particular need both, and what do each of them bring to the meaning?

Thai use "-ing" for express present event.
You understand right. -ing = กำลัง

I think "อยู่/ตอนนี้" = now
may be use: เขากำลังอ่านหนังสืออยู่/ตอนนี้

My understanding is that Thai shows the difference between something you are actually doing at the moment of talking and something you are in the process of doing but not right at that moment.

EG: ผมกำลังเรียนภาษาไทย. I am learning Thai. You might say this if someone interrupts your Thai learning and asks 'what are you doing'?
ผมกำลังเรียนภาษาไทยอยู่. I am learning Thai. You might say this if someone commends you on your Thai ability while you are chatting with them at the bar. Indicating you are in the process of doing it, as yet unfinished, but not actually doing it at that moment.

Thats how I was taught. Since coming to Thailand I have noticed that Thais more often just use อยู่ at the end of the sentence when talking about something happening at the moment rather than กำลัง.
EG: กินข้าวอยู่ - We are eating นอนหลับอยู่ไหม? - Are you sleeping?

Don't take what I have said as being gospel truth but wait for a native or more experienced member to correct.

Toffeeman, if what you say is indeed true then it was a very clear explanation, and I appreciate the examples.

As you say, if a native is able to confirm, it would be great!

My Thai Reference Grammar book has a couple of pages on the difference between กำลัง and อยู่, so it must be a fairly common question, but I'd rather leave the book as a last resort if I have native input available here.

I have always thought that adding อยู่ to กำลัง was a way to insist > at that right moment

so that I would say ผมกำลังเรียนภาษาไทยอยู่ in answer to What are you doing now ?

I think a native's advice will be fine here !

In my opinion, "อยู่" doesn't have a strict way to use
Use or not have a little effect to feeling
and don't have any effect to the meaning because of spoken language

So I'll explain my feeling when I hear or see each sentence from foreigns ( in spoken and informal written )
and I'll explain in Thai because I'm afraid of wrong translate to ENG
If you can't understand my Thai words, can ask for more explain

1. ผมเรียนภาษาไทย
หากได้รับคำตอบนี้ เมื่อฉันถามคุณว่า "ทำอะไรอยู่หรอ?" หรือชมคุณว่า "พูดไทยเก่งจังเลย"

1. ผมเรียนภาษาไทย

You view this as an incomplete sentence which is the same as in English. If we heard someone reply with the words "I learn Thai" we would understand but think the person is missing some basic grammar in the sentence.

หากได้รับคำตอบนี้ เมื่อฉันถามคุณว่า "ทำอะไรอยู่หรอ?" --- ฉันรู้สึกว่า ฉันได้รับคำตอบที่เป็นภาษาเขียน แต่ฉันเข้าใจคุณ

For the 1st sentence this would sound like 'the written language' but you would understand.
For the 2nd sentence you say you would feel a little 'ขัด'. I'm not sure what this means but have will guess at 'something missing' as you expect the word 'อยู่ to end the sentence but you would understand anyway.

3. ผมเรียนภาษาไทยอยู่
หากได้รับคำตอบนี้ เมื่อฉันถามคุณว่า "ทำอะไรอยู่หรอ?" หรือชมคุณว่า "พูดไทยเก่งจังเลย" --- ฉันเข้าใจคุณ ไม่รู้สึกขัดกับคำตอบที่ได้รับ และคนไทยมักจะพูดแบบนี้

This sentence is the one that most Thais would use and you wouldn't feel anything was missing.

4. ผมกำลังเรียนภาษาไทยอยู่

This sentence is also correct for the question "ทำอะไรอยู่หรอ?" but you say that if you met a person who 'thinks a lot' maybe we would say a 'sensitive person' then they might feel you were being sarcastic as you included a word in the answer that they didn't use in the question thus it may seem you are correcting their Thai.

For the question "พูดไทยเก่งจังเลย", if I used กำลัง in the answer you would feel it wasn't correct as that would mean I should be doing it at that moment which means to me the word กำลัง conveys the meaning of 'doing it now' more than อยู่.

So in summary I would say that the word อยู่ is used more often by Thais in their speech which is something I have noticed too as my 2 examples show in my previous post. Please feel free to correct my understanding and also I would appreciate a more precise definition of รู้สึกขัด.
