Adapted from w3dictionary:
ขัดหู V. jar def:[ฟังไม่ถูกหู, ฟังไม่เพราะหู]
How about, "uncomfortable to listen to"; "lacking fluidity of speech"; "ineloquent"; "off-kilter".
I think that the expression ขัดหู indicates speech with is comprehensible, but not quite eloquent or fluid as an educated native speaker would articulate.

What do you think?

Thanks for the huge amount of info guys -- my girlfriend said exactly the same as what Toffeeman originally said, almost word for word. Good job =)
