Past tense..I was.... and then...

The structure of Thai sentences

Moderator: daฟาน

Past tense..I was.... and then...

Postby bifftastic » Wed Nov 16, 2011 7:03 pm

Hi people :)

I'd like to ask about the structure of this sentence, I've got an idea of how it should be formed, but I'm not sure and I don't want to reinforce any (more?) bad habits in my thinking, so I would value your assistance.

I would like to construct the following sentence;

"I was waiting for you to call me last night, but when you didn't, I went on my own (or by myself) "

And here's my shot at it;

เมื่อคืนผม(กำลัง?)รอคุณโทรมา แต่เมื่อคุณไม่ได้ทำ (or โทรมา again?) ผมไปคนเดียว (do I need to put this part in the past tense as well?)

Am I close?

It also sounds a little abrupt at the end, so I imagine a suitable particle would be added, depending on who you were talking to :)

Thanks in advance,

Biff

I know we have had a translation from a native speaker but it seems to me that it is a very direct translation of the English. Would a Thai actually say it like this. I was thinking that each sentence has a subject. ผม is used twice and คุณ once. Thais seem to knock out the subject if at all possible. I also thought there might be at least 1 ก็ in there.

I think this would be fine :
เมื่อคืนนี้ ผมรอโทรศัพท์ของคุณ
แต่คุณไม่ได้โทรมาหาผม ผมเลยต้องไปคนเดียว

Khun Claude kha,

Your translation is fine and clear. :D

But, if the OP want a shorter one, then you can say "เมื่อคืนผมรอโทรศัพท์คุณ แต่คุณไม่โทรมา ผมก็เลยไปคนเดียว"

Thank you, Khun Nan !
Of course, the shorter translation is the better one !

At first I read the last sentence as: ผม ก็ เลยไป คน เดียว
But after checking the dictionary section I think it is like this: ผม ก็เลย ไป คน เดียว
เลยไป - further, beyond. ก็เลย - thus, therefore, so, colloquial form of จึง.
Would I be correct in splitting the words like this?

I find myself struggling to learn how sentences are structured in Thai, which tends to mean that, as someone has pointed out, I end up with a fairly straight 'conversion' of an English sentence but with Thai words.

This is far from ideal, and I would appreciate some pointers from forum members as to how my learning can progress.

Thanks,

Biff
