QUESTION TO khun OHMMO

Postby claude06thailand » Fri Jan 20, 2012 7:52 pm

Re: หนูแกสบี้

Khun Ohmmo, I find these 3 phrases interesting

เท่าที่เคยได้ยินมาคือ เป็นชื่อที่คนขายสัตว์เลี้ยงตั้งขึ้น จะด้วยเหตุใดก็ไม่ทราบได้

The use of คือ just before เป็น surprises me, as well as ได้
I suppose it is idiomatic ?

I would have written :

เท่าที่เคยได้ยินมา เป็นชื่อที่คนขายสัตว์เลี้ยงตั้งขึ้น จะด้วยเหตุใดก็ไม่ทราบ

Is that possible too ?

Hi Claude,

Usually, it is impossible for เป็น and คือ to occur together like this,
as they both are verbs to be, BUT, in this case, it is perfectly fine and correct :)
That is because there is an underlying subject in this sentence :)

เท่าที่เคยได้ยินมาคือ เป็นชื่อที่คนขายสัตว์เลี้ยงตั้งขึ้น จะด้วยเหตุใดก็ไม่ทราบได้
As far as I have heard is that (it) was the name that the person who sells pets created, with some reason that I cannot know.

So see? The sentence that has คือ and เป็น is actually a complex sentence with two clauses :)

Also, to answer your question, yes, it is possible to omit ได้ at the end.
To be more precise, it is not even necessary to put it there. Your version sounds more correct.
If there was to be ได้ in the sentence, it'd be more natural to add อาจ too, as follows.
เท่าที่เคยได้ยินมาคือ เป็นชื่อที่คนขายสัตว์เลี้ยงตั้งขึ้น จะด้วยเหตุใดก็ไม่อาจทราบได้
