I just found another example with การ :

กำลังเป็นปัญหาที่มีการพูดถึงกันอย่างกว้างขวาง

กำลัง another word in which I can interest noone;
กำลัง ๑ น. แรง, สิ่งที่ทําให้เกิดอํานาจความเข้มแข็ง.
That's it as far as RID is concerned.

So this should be a discussion of แรง
Strength is a problem, a problem attracting a lot of attention/ discussed widely/ or something else..
Do you think it means this?
Or does it mean this?;
กำลังเป็น showing something is in the present?
......is currently is a problem(then a description of the problem)

From the definition of อยู่ in the RID กำลัง is used and if the RID is consistent must mean แรง
อยู่ [หฺยู่] ก. พัก, อาศัย, เช่น เขาอยู่บ้านหลังนี้; ยังมีชีวิต เช่น เขายังอยู่;
คงที่ เช่น เงินที่ให้มายังอยู่ครบ, ไม่ไปจากที่ เช่น วันนี้เขาอยู่บ้าน;
ใช้ประกอบหลังกริยา แสดงว่ากําลังเป็นอยู่ในขณะนั้น เช่น นอนอยู่
ตั้งอยู่.


I hope someone is interested enough to comment because it กำลังเป็น means presently in the definition here it looks as though even the RID can not be understood without a grammar book in English. This would prove that my attempts at understanding Thai using the RID have been misguided.

I do not use the RID very often and agree with you that the absence of any indication about กำลัง as an auxiliary ist surprising...
Actually, I used to have a slow internet connection and did not take the habit of using the RID.
But now I have a good connection and will use the RID more often since, even if there are some flaws, it is the reference for thai language.

Believe it or not, I started to use RID after I had given some answers in this forum.

As for 'กำลัง' in "กำลังเป็นปัญหาที่มีการพูดถึงกันอย่างกว้างขวาง", it is said by พระยาอุปกิตศิลปสาร in หลักภาษาไทย that 'กำลังเป็น' is one of the three 'กริยาวลี' or 'phrasal verbs'. They are กริยาวลีบอกมาลา (the phrasal verb indicating mood), กริยาวลีบอกกาล (the phrasal verb indicating tense) and กริยาวลีบอกวาจก (the phrasal verb indicating voice).

You're probably right in that grammar books can be of help.

Oh that's good, and I think that I am as ready as I shall ever be to have a go at T/E dictionaries too. As Pirin says they can be of help, grammar books - I still have my doubts.
I never quote the RID before I have researched in the hard copy which I read at breakfast time, waiting for coffee and porridge. My I'net is so slow that I can find a word faster in the hard copy than on-line especially when spelling is in doubt, at such times the on-line version is useless; one tone mark wrong and it hasn't a clue.
I have just put in ขลุย and this is what I got; ขจุย ขยุย ขยุย ขลาย ขลุก ขลุก ขลุบ ขลุม

Sometimes it doesn't even give suggestions.
