อุบัติเหตุ

Aural and oral characteristics of the Thai language

อุบัติเหตุ

Postby daฟาน » Mon Mar 11, 2013 11:08 pm

I used to pronounce อุบัติเหตุ as อุ บัต ติ เหต

I just came across the pronunciation: อุ บัต เหต without the ติ

The dictionary here says the first pronunciation, including the ติ. I talked to a Thai and she said she would rather say it without the ติ.

Are both possible? Are also both actually used in real life? Thanks

I have always heard อุบัติเหตุ as อุ บัต ติ เหต and I am interested in a Native's answer about it.

Here are a few words of the same family, from Thai2English dictionary :

อุบัติ [ อุ-บัด ] u-bàt [ Verb, of Pali/Sanskrit origin ]
[to] happen ; take place ; occur
*****************
อุบัติเหตุ / u-bàt hàyt / accident ; mishap ; crash
อุบัติภัย / u-bàt pai / accident
อุบัติขึ้น / u-bàt kêun / [to] happen ; occur
อุบัติการณ์ / u-bàt gaan / incident ; event
การอุบัติ / gaan u-bàt / occurrence ; happening
อุบัติรถชน / u-bàt rót chon / car crash ; car accident

The correct, formal, official pronunciation is อุ-บัด-ติ-เหด (with the "ติ")
If you listen to news, the reporter will pronounce it the correct way but in spoken language, we use both versions,
but more frequently, we pronounce it the easy way, without the ติ :D

Both are (theoretically) correct although the อุบัดติ one is (officially) common.

You must have a different version of the RID. mine has [อุบัด, อุบัดติ-]
If it is anything like England where role models came from reality shows and football pitches, ignorance of language is a badge of honour, language represents authority, the status quo, the stifling of initiative, the oppression of school etc. and must be rejected innit?
To announce that any word is being spoken in the official way is like the "kiss of death " to some people, it targets the word as one which deserves the treatment. :D

In the movie Bangkok Traffic Love Story, Khun Loong (who's very well spoken) pronounces it as อุ บัต เหต

The Routledge Colloquial course also teaches it as being pronounced อุ บัต เหต

Yes the RID is mostly wrong in these situations, as I said probably because it is the RID :D
To me it is a lot easier to say อุบัติเหตุ but then, I am reading it. Here is an explanation of การอ่านตามความนิยม
การอ่านตามความนิยม หมายถึง การอ่านที่ไม่เป็นไปตามหลักเกณฑ์ของภาษาแต่ยอมรับกันว่าถูกต้องเพราะนิยมอ่านกันมานานจนกลายเป็นความเคยชินเนื่องจากความเหมาะสมกับเสียงของคนไทยสะดวกปาก และไพเราะน่าฟัง
From this อุบัติเหตุ doesn't qualify because 1. it hasn't been นิยมกันมานาน 2. only some people are เคยชิน 3. it is not สะดวกปาก (but not being Thai I can't be sure of this)4 it isn't ไพเราะน่าฟัง
But more importantly the pronunciation in the RID would show it if it broke the rules, or if their is a choice:
Eg. ประโยค. [ปฺระโหฺยก ] คุณประโยชน์ [คุนนะปฺระโหฺยด, คุณปฺระโหฺยด]
Incidentally the book from which I took the explanation lists คุณประโยชน์ as คุน-ประ-โหยด and gives no choice.

I am not being any more finicky than it is to ask the question, I am just giving as much info. as I have, so that you can decide for yourself.
As the Aussies says: Rule one; there are no rules. You will never be wrong if you adopt that mantra.

So you can be comforted by this when you พูดบกพร่อง
