Here's an IPA version of the chart which attempts to show the slight quality differences in the geminate pairs. It's based on eyeballing an average of the two native Thai speakers in Abramson's (1962) study.

Richard, would you be able to offer a citation for this observation? It would be quite useful for my current coursework.

Alas, no. I'd have to google to find it.

แอ - The British pronunciation of "air" (i.e. without the American curled "r" at the end).

Glenn,

It would sure be spiffy to add the Thai vowels and nomenclature to this chart. See attached for a sample.

And, are there variations in phonetic rendering? Iwasaki and Ingkaphirom seem to have a slightly different version. Thanks.

Khun David,

I'm a bit curious to know if you've noticed that you happened to switch the short and long vowels around.

They had better appear as shown in the following example:

i (อิ) iː (อี)

ʉ (อึ) ʉː (อือ)

o (โอะ) oː (โอ)
:-)

Yes, thank you. I don't read phonetics well. That's any I asked for a chart with the Thai orthography.
