How do you pronounce....?

Postby Mika » Wed Jan 18, 2012 11:31 am

Hi there, I'm totally new here. :)

First, I'd like to thank you for this amazing Web site. It helped me understand the pronunciation of many Thai words. But I've still got A LOT to learn.

I hope you could help me pronounce the following:
1. "Mor Hin Khow". I'm not sure if I should pronounce the "r" in "Mor". With "or" endings, do you drop the "r"? And how to pronounce "Khow"? I don't understand the "ow" vowel ending.
2. "Hat Salad". I think it's also spelled "Haad Salad", but I'm not sure. How do you pronounce the terminal "d"? Is it more like a "t",hmmm, "Salat"?

Mika :?: :P :?:
P.S. I hope it's okay if I ask more questions now and then.

Ask as much as you want but you need to say what the word means.
Are these rice cooker and place(a seaside place named for a fish)? We can look up the Thai and tell you how to pronounce it if we know the Thai word.

Hi Tgeezer.

1. The "Hat Salad" is a beach resort (Koh Phangan). I looked up the meaning of the name, and found it was translated as "Pirate Beach". I looked up 'Pirate' in the thai-language.com website, and found "สลัด" with sound example, it did sound like "Salat". I think I answered my own question. Anyway, I googled the beach's Thai name. I think it's: หาดสลัด (I hope I got it right).

2. "Mor Hin Khow". Alternate spelling is "Mor Hin Khao". I found on the web that it's nicknamed ‘Stonehenge of Thailand’, and is part of Phu Laenkha National Park.
I found a picture of the sign with the Thai name on it:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KvsPdo1Aogg/S ... AG0456.JPG, and another one here: http://travel.edtguide.com/share/lightb ... height=550
I tried to copy the Thai name-> มอหินขาว (I think).

Thanks :)
Mika

Well done. Typing in Thai also. I have learnt something too, that pirate is the same word as salad in English. Does it sound like salad to you?
หาด is correct and means beach.

Phonetically there is no final d in a Thai syllable. In theory, a final (phonetical) t is a "non-aspirated, voiceless" sound. Nearest to this theoretical description comes initial Thai letter (to tao).

Thanks so much r2d2 and Tgeezer!!! :D

I'll have to remember the "no final d" pronunciation rule.

At first I thought "Salad" meant "various mixtures of raw or cooked vegetables" :D - when you pronounce it with a final "d" instead of "t", that's what it sounds like! But then I googled, and found it really meant "Pirate Beach" -> http://hotel-travel-phangan.com/article ... -salad.htm

About the "Mor Hin Khow" or "Mor Hin Khao" name: I found a youtube movie. The guy there says the name at the beginning and at the end of the clip, but he speaks so fast I can't get the place's name right: http://youtu.be/5qsAmYf0ntA
I'm not even sure the movie in Thai! I apologize if it's not.

'Salad' in Thai has two meanings; the English food and pirate.
There are only six syllable endings in Thai -K,-P, -T, -M, -N,-NG The first three are apologies for a consonant; they just die, not like a good solid English ending -ka -pa -ta. The second group of three are as we would say them.
If you want to get really interested take a look at the rest of this site. :)
