Thai Smiles

Postby robbiesworld » Thu Dec 29, 2011 1:20 pm

Can anyone help me with this list of various types of Thai smiles I came across. I would like them written in Thai script if possible. Thanks in advance.

Isn't there a "that's not funny I'm so going to kill you" smile?

Or is it just my wife that has that one? ;)

It doesn't mean anything if she isn't holding a knife. :lol:

Is เลศนัย a noun? It is not in the dictionary, and T2E seems to be coy about it.

Is เลศ a noun? T2E doesn't think so.

Thanks a lot for that, Nan. Unfortunately, when I copied and pasted the list I missed a few off. Hope you can help with the remainder:-

- yim tak tai: The polite smile, used for strangers

- feun yim: The “I-am-forced-to-smile-even-I-do-not-want-to” smile

- yim cheuat cheuan: The winner’s smile over a rival

- yim tang nam dtah: The truly happy smile

- yim tak tan: The “sorry-you-are-wrong-again” smile

Thanks again

There are two options;

ยิ้มสังหาร and ยิ้มซ่อนมีด which means "one who looks kind and nice but inside is ruthless. They can be used in either serious way or joking way.

From Dr.Wit Thai-English dictionary;

เลศ (เลด) (let)
(., .) กล, อุบาย, ส่วนเล็กน้อย. n. S. trick, trickery, delusion, fraud, wile, small portion.

เลศนัย
(.) เงื่อนงำ, สิ่งที่ซ่อนเร้น. n. hint, ruse, hidden motive, hidden article, secret understanding.

ยิ้มทักทาย - yim tak tai: The polite smile, used for strangers

ฝืนยิ้ม - feun yim: The “I-am-forced-to-smile-even-I-do-not-want-to” smile

ยิ้มทั้งน้ำตา - yim tang nam dtah: The truly happy smile.

I don't know how to write "yim cheuat cheuan", can't think of any right now. If I would have this smile, it would be "ยิ้มเยาะเย้ย ยิ้มเย้ย".

robbiesworld wrote:- yim tak tan: The “sorry-you-are-wrong-again” smile

I'm not sure for this one either. I would say "ยิ้มทับถม" in this case.

I think it should be ยิ้มเฉือดเชือน, but I don't think it's fit to this definition.

เฉือดเชือน means 'cut to the heard of'.

What do you think?
