จิ้งจก < ตุ๊กแก

จิ้งจก < ตุ๊กแก

Postby Rick Bradford » Thu May 03, 2012 1:45 pm

For anyone interested in their gecko names, these are two related but different animals which are ubiquitous in rural houses.

จิ้งจก is the little one (Hemidactylus platyurus, 5-10cm) that scoots about all day.

ตุ๊กแก is a large reptile which only appears at night and is a totally different proposition, Gekko gecko with a maximum length of 40cm, not appearing to be afraid of anything, and which will apparently bite -- though this is more likely to happen if they are kept as pets and have no opportunity to flee.

It resembles a wall-climbing baby crocodile....

ahhh, I have wondered about this for a while. Whenever I tell people that there was a foot long gecko on the back of my house noone believes me. I have never seen anything like it since.

Thanks

Believe it or not, a cat and ตุ๊กแก might never allow จิ้งจก to live at you place.

If you want to buy velcro, you'll ask for ตีนตุ๊กแก

I just bought some Velcro and indeed it is “feet of a Tokay” เทป. Thankfully I had a piece of it with me or I’d possibly still be stuck at the hardware store miming out what I wanted. Just an FYI, double sided tape here is called เทปสองหน้า or "two faced tape". :)

Here’s a cute Thai commercial which shows what จิ้งจก’s look like.

I find their small eggs behind the p/c's speakers on my desk every so often, although I’m always too late in actually seeing the babies  . All I find are the broken shells after they’ve hatched.
