background of 'wedding' & 'marriage'

Postby michaelmacleod » Fri Oct 07, 2011 6:14 pm

I am going to Thailand to attend a family wedding and have been asked to speak, both in English and Thai. I got to wondering what the etymology and history of the Thai words for wedding and marriage are. The parts of both words ('taeng' + 'ngan'; and 'som' + 'rote') are interesting, maybe telling.
I thought that someone might provide a gem that I could incorporate into my little presentation, especially if it might be enlightening to the farangs in the crowd. Any information will be appreciated!

Michael,

Welcome to Thai-language.com!

This is not exactly what you asked for, but you may wish to look at the following for some ideas for giving a blessing in Thai at a wedding:

http://www.thai-language.com/id/226157
http://www.thai-language.com/id/216090

In addition, back to your question, I suspect that you would not get into trouble were you to say that สมรส is an amalgam of two words: "เหมาะสม" and "รสชาติ", whether this is factually true or not.

It is too bad that the spelling of the word is not "สมรด" so that "รดน้ำ" is not part of the linguistic equation.

Have a wonderful trip!

Wedding traditions? Really? Seems like a link to your 'self-help' page to me!

Congratulations on saving your marriage, I'm sure it was an admirable achievement, although I doubt that advice on how to save a fractured marriage would be suitable material for a speech at a Thai wedding.

I think Micheal is looking for where the words came from, like about how 'taeng' + 'ngan' originally had something to do with a parcel of land used as a dowry etc.

I'm bumping this topic because I've had an email from the OP Micheal requesting material for his upcoming speech.

Are there any Master of Ceremonies / etymologists out there?

I've just learned a new word for marriage,
วิวาห์ (wiwaa)
which is right next to วิวาท (wiwaad) which means to quarrel.

Now don't try and tell me those two words are not related. :D

If the OP Micheal does want a translating version of what he plans to say, I can be of help.

I thank the respondents. I think I know what I shall say at the wedding, both in English and in Thai. If I butcher the Thai a little, it won't be the first time; if it were perfect, people would know I was only reciting!
Thanks, again!

Just wondering how it went? How'd you do? I'm planning some Destination Weddings in Thailand soon.

Thanks in advance,
