context

Postby claude06thailand » Fri Oct 14, 2011 11:51 pm

We often ask for some context to help translate a word.
I just found another word for "context" and proposed it to the TL dictionary : คำแวดล้อม

คำแวดล้อม is the context of a sentence

another word is บริบท > ข้อความแวดล้อมที่ช่วยในการเข้าใจความหมาย

เนื้อเรื่อง is used for the context or subject of a story, movie

I think that when we use the word context we don't mean context so much as words in proximity or one another.
I think that คำแว้ดล้อม covers this situation and is self explanatory and it would be risky to say that it meant context.

I understand your (English) explanation of คำแว้ดล้อม but the word แว้ด (in this context...no pun intended) is puzzling to me. :? Could you please clarify?

Yes, I wrongly used the 2nd tone mark to show the 2nd tone.
Since the word แวด is a dead word with long vowel and low class initial consonant it doesn't need a tone mark at all.
Also แว้ดล้อม doesn't make sense in any context, so don't you mean that you understand my explanation of คำแวดล้อม ?
Sorry for the lackadaisical approach, but I had just arrived from UK that same day and was tired. . 8-)

Tgeezer, thanks for the correction. I'm a newbie, so if you tell me that คำแว้ดล้อม means 'surrounding words' I'll believe you ;) However, I'm a stickler for trying to break down compound words and phrases, and of course, that's when I hit a brick wall.

Excellent attitude, I hope that you had fun breaking down แว้ดล้อม and thanks for noticing. :x (smiley is only joking.)

When reading articles about the ideas related to "context", we tend to find "บริบท" or "เนื้อความ" interchangeably.

Khun Pirin, I would like to know you opinion about คำแวดล้อม as surrounding words in a sentence.
Is it a word you met before or maybe it was invented by someone ?
Thank you in advance !

It means บริบท exactly what it says Claude บริบท [บอริบด] (ไว) . คําหรือข้อความแวดล้อมเพื่อช่วยให้เข้าใจความหมาย,
ปริบท ก็ว่า.
I have just looked it up in the OED and it says more or less the same. No one picked me up on it as usual. As I keep saying we are allowed to be wrong and I for one want my errors pointed out.

Actually does 'surrounding words' mean context in English? I would say out of context. I suspect that นอกบริบท is likely to be preferred to something that can handily use the noun phrase คำแวดล้อม .
