อย่าเพิ่ง

Thai words and their origins

อย่าเพิ่ง

Postby claude06thailand » Sun Dec 11, 2011 10:04 pm

yesterday, I was about to take a picture and the girl said : อย่าเพิ่ง ! อย่าเพิ่ง !
First time I heard that, but easy to understand : not yet ! or "wait !"

Thai2English has it : อย่าเพิ่ง(...)นะ

and it seems you can say : อย่าเพิ่งถ่ายรูปนะ > อย่าเพิ่งพูดนะ

I once saw that combination used when someone was flossing their teeth in public and a Thai said to them อย่าเพิ่งทำ with a disapproving look which I took to mean 'Don't do that!"

I remember agonizing over this one some time ago using the 2525 edition of the RID which doesn't have the extra definition which I have highlighted.
I came to the conclusion that it was what you might say to a child. The admonition would be อย่าพื่งทำ , meaning don't create a situation of พึ่งทำ. (a situation of having just done it a moment ago).

in my example, it was before any action was done and more like : wait a minute before taking the picture, because I am not ready : อย่าเพิ่ง ! short for อย่าเพิ่งถ่ายรูป

I accept that Claude, I was answering the next poster who seemed not to be so familiar with the expression.

The times I have seen or heard this phrase, it seems to carry a message of "don't hurry to.."', "don't be quick to...", such as when it was spoken by one of the leaders of last year's Bangkok demonstrations, urging the mass of people not to abandon their positions and return home:

อย่าเพิ่งเก็บผ้ากลับบ้าน

I have also heard อย่าเพิ่งโมโห..., which would probably translate best into English as "Don't be angry..." , but this English phrase, to my ears, also has that time aspect: "Don't be angry [until you've heard everything I have to say]", a stalling phrase.

That is not what the RID has decided it means; ห้ามไม่ให้กระทำในขณะนั้น; there is authority there isn't there?
I wonder how important that is, certainly not in the original post where it would seem to be no more than รอสักครู่ .

I think อย่าเพิ่ง carries some authority in any case, according to the circumstances.
ห้ามไม่ให้กระทำในขณะนั้น means : don't do that right now, which implies that you can do it later.

In the case of taking a picture, of course it is not a strict injunction. Maybe just a little more than รอสักครู่.

Perhaps, but what more is there? only context, and you gave context in your post, so we respectively know exactly what it means.

OK, Tgeezer, not much different but รอสักครู่ is a mild form of asking to wait and
อย่าเพิ่ง ! อย่าเพิ่ง ! implies some more strength...

I have heard รอสักครู่ hundred of times in the last years and อย่าเพิ่ง ! only one time a few days ago...
