Orthography/Punctuation (mostly ๆ)

Postby Vortarulo » Fri May 11, 2012 1:20 pm

Hi,
I would like to know more about the punctuation of Thai. Granted, there is not much "punctuation" in the strict sense, but I'd like to get it right. I usually know where spaces come in a sentence (before cited words or names, between sentences and clauses). My questions are:

1) Do I have to put a space behind the particle ว่า or only if a longer sentence follows? I sometimes see people not use a space if there are only a few more words.
2) What is the proper way to write the repetition sign? I think there is definitely a space behind it, but should there be one before it, too?
3) Is a space behind the abbreviation sign mandatory? I've always seen it with one.

Thanks in advance!

Andre,

The Royal Institute has published a paper on spacing between words which you can find at http://www.royin.go.th/th/profile/index ... emMenuIDS= .

In addition, these rules have been summarized in English at http://www.thai-language.com/ref/spacing .

Thanks, David! That's an excellent overview.
Now I feel a bit safer in writing. :)
