Writing Order

Postby MrkLbs » Tue Aug 02, 2011 2:52 am

Hi everyone~
I just have found this site and I'm trying to learn to write in Thai, but my problem is that I don't know how to write this symbols (in paper) is there a special order for writing them?
Because when I try to write them it looks really strange ._.
I can read and write in Korean, and a little bit of Chinese, those languages have a special order for writing hangeul or hanzi (stroke order), so I was wandering if exists a way that I can write in Thai that would make my writing more understandable.

I hope you can help me.

btw, I just want to learn this to learn to write and read words, I don't know if in the future I will learn to speak in Thai, but it's a nice (and a little bit strange) language~

To write a consonant on paper, start with the little circle that most consonants have.

To write a word, start with any preposed vowel. Then write the initial consonant(s). Then write any vowel under the consonant, then any vowel over the consonant and any tone mark. Then write any vowel following the consonant. Then write any final consonant(s).

For drawing the characters, http://learningthai.com may have some help. If you are in Thailand it should be easy to get a book to practise with. If not in Thailand, see if there is a local Asian bookshop or use the internet.

There's pretty nifty website hosted by the Department of Non-Formal Education and the Ministry of Education called; Thai Language e-Learning.
The site is; http://www.teachthai.com

I think it was originally designed to teach English speaking children of Thai nationals stationed overseas to read and write Thai.

It's really a good site and I taught myself to read & write Thai by using it. Once you make a user name and password, it's totally free. I think I spent a couple hundred hours on there going thru the lessons and exercises. Then again I'm a slow learner, lol..
It taught in English by cartoons character (a Thai girl, a talking book, a calligraphy brush, etc). Still even though it's designed for children, I found the material presented in a logical way and didn't think it was 'dumbed down' in the least.

You might find it of value, I know I did.
Good luck. . .

Thanks for the tip. It's a bit tricky to register with FireFox, though. I went through Chapter 5, Vocabulary, but the girls voice is not clear, though it is understandable.
