I've already given the etymological reason - borrowing through Khmer. Further more, I suggest that the Pali forms are original, so the words would have entered Thai as *ปวัติ and *ปโยชน์. Once the words have become fixed, restoring the Sanskrit spelling is unlikely to affect the tone.

It may be unnecessary to appeal to Pali - ประวัติ and ประโยชน์ are subject to the same feature spreading as *ปวัติ and *ปโยชน์ in Khmer.

This might also be the clue to "อนาถ". I do wonder about that to "อเนก (อน + เอก)" though. :?:
