Thai Numbers

Postby magikalcamel » Tue Oct 04, 2011 4:35 am

What is the differnece between the different numbering systems?
The number categories has ordinal numbers, numerals, thai digits, pali numbers. Some of these have different words, or symbols, and I can't find an explaination.

Pali numbers are, essentially, numbers in the Pali language, except that in Thai they do not inflect. Their uses are limited to special contexts, including '2' in telephone numbers, numbering of tone marks, prefixes in compounds and suffixes in rank, with เอก being the highest.

In some informal contexts, you might find that what a person says can include the unfamiliar words from up to two languages in it.

For example, should you find a sentence like, "โทเฟลเด็กที่นี่ เกือบได้อันดับบ๊วย" when reading a newspaper, please consult friends instead of the dictionary.

You might find that โทเฟล is TOEFL whereas บ๊วย, which (according to RID)seems to be derived from Chinese, means the last.
