My personal point of view :

I suppose few people are interested in Thai language if they have never been to Thailand or do not plan to visit Thailand and do not know some Thai national.
But Thai language may be an excellent exercise for the brain, like crosswords or similar games.

As for me, living in Thailand, I cannot imagine to rely only on English.
Learning Thai has really changed my life. I progressively discovered that I was wrong on many points about Thai ways. My relation to Thai people has improved a lot, I have been able to make friends with them, to exchange ideas, to learn from them.

In everyday life, I now feel quite independant, able to get what I need without trouble and misunderstanding.
And I really feel how Thai people appreciate it.

I can live on my own out of the tourist trade, read the newspapers, watch TV (even if I cannot catch everything...)

Learning Thai everyday has become a habit like riding my bicycle and I have much fun at it.

I wish I had found this site when I started learning about 10 years ago. It would have been a great help indeed !
Thanks to everybody at Thai-language, especially to Thai natives who are a great help !

I learn Thai because of my life long fascination with the country, the hope of another trip there and the mental stimulation of language study.

I would like to add my five bobs worth.
Without native speakers the puzzle would have no solution and we would find ourselves discussing schools and their various merits.
My sincere thanks to all native speakers who contribute and hope that they may be encouraged by us giving them some help with English as a quid pro quo. . There is a variety of English here, and I hope to find a similar choice from them. As montyb says; you are never too old to learn.

So that I can do things on my own, under my own terms, when I so desire. Buy a vehicle, open a bank account, order food, talk to villagers on my bike rides, read store front signs, read instructions on insecticides/medicines/food items, and finally, to sound like someone who lives here, versus someone who is simply visiting.
