Firstly, do these two words differ in any way in their meaning?

"She is stubborn and childish; she will do the opposite of whatever you tell her"

The word opposite in Enlish is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to the "other side" of an object. The "other side" could be the front or the back of an object and it usally refers to the side of the object that is currently out of view. How do you express this in Thai e.g.

"There is graffiti on the other side of this billboard"
"There is a shop on the other side of this wall"

Purely from the point of view of grammar as a hobby you understand.
ตรงข้าม describes the position of something; on the opposite side of a road, river, for instance. 'straight accross' อยู่ที่ตรงข้าม
Also; the opposite sex; เพ็ศตรงข้าม (translating from English for instance).
ตรงกันข้าม involves two things (กัน) so means opposite one another; houses อยู่ตรงกันข้าม, sit ตรงกันข้าม
It should be possible to tell from the context.
You would need a native speaker for translation, because all that is said in one word; ดื้อ ว. ไม่ยอมเชื่อฟังหรือทําตาม. not accept listen or do follow.

I think that is what the poster wanted; the side not seen. If there is an object( house) which clearly has a front and a back side then หน้า and หลัง work fine I think. The same can be said of a wall, the side you are looking at or referring to may not be the 'face side' in architecturally but is ด้านหน้า relatively.
If nothing else this sort of discussion brings the language alive, and certainly helps my spelling.
Is there anything to discuss here?
A car has a side, ด้านข้าง is what my E/T dictionary calls it, so ข้าง seems to have come to mean beside, perhaps because of the วิเศษณ์ ข้าง ฯ, but it appears ข้างหน้า ข้างหลัง can be used interchangeably with ด้านหน้า ด้านหลัง.
