ในฐานะที่เป็นนักแปลมืออาชีพ อยากจะแวะมาแบ่งปันความรู้เกี่ยวกับการแปลเอกสารจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ในเว็บบอร์ดดีๆแห่งนี้นะครับ เพราะในปัจจุบันพื้นฐาน มาตรฐานการแปลนั้นตกต่ำลงพอสมควร และสิ่งที่ผมเป็นห่วงเป็นอย่างยิ่งก็คือ การที่ฝรั่งส่วนใหญ่คิดว่า เขาจะสามารถใช้ Google Translate ในการแปลได้ และ copy เอกสารทั้งดุ้นมา ปรากฎว่าก็อ่านไม่รู้เรื่องนะครับ บางครั้งผมเห็นจดหมายภาษาไทย ที่มีลูกค้านำมาให้อ่านก็ตลกมาก เพราะฝรั่งเล่นแปล โดยใช้ Google Translate แล้วก็ส่งมาให้ มันก็อ่านไม่ออกน่ะสิครับ เพราะอย่างที่เราทราบกันดีว่า ประสิทธิภาพของ โปรแกรมแปลภาษาตัวนี้ ตลอดจนทุกๆ โปรแกรมในโลกปัจจุบัน ล้วนไม่ได้เศษเสี้ยวความสามารถของมนุษย์เราทั้งสิ้น แต่สิ่งที่แย่กว่านั้นที่ผมเจอก็คือ ผู้รับแปลเอกสารบางคน ใช้ประโยชน์จาก โปรแกรมแปลภาษา แล้วเอางานส่งไปให้ลูกค้า โดยคิดว่าลูกค้าส่วนมาก อ่านภาษาปลายทางไม่ออกอยู่แล้ว และลูกค้าส่วนใหญ่จะไม่ตรวจทานงานละเอียดอยู่แล้ว ทำอย่างนี้ก็แย่นะครับ นอกจากทำให้ลูกค้าเสียหายแล้ว ทำให้นักแปลเอกสารชาวไทย และวงการแปลในประเทศไทยเสียหายไปด้วย เพราะฉะนั้นอยากจะแนะนำในสองด้านถึงการป้องกันปัญหาเหล่านี้ ทั้งในส่วนของผู้แปลเอง และของผู้จ้างแปลครับ

ในส่วนของนักแปลนั้น ผมคงจะแนะนำอะไรมากไม่ได้ เพราะเชื่ออยู่แล้วว่า ทุกคนทราบดีว่า มันเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่ดี และไม่ควรทำ แต่ที่ทำนั้น เพราะต้องการกำไรที่มากขึ้น ประหยัดเวลา โดยลดคุณภาพลง (มาก) โดยการใช้โปรแกรมแปลเอกสารมากเกินไป หากใช้เป็นตัวช่วยอาจได้บ้าง เพื่อเตือนความจำสำหรับศัพท์เฉพาะที่แปลไปแล้ว แต่หากใช้ทั้งหมดนั้นคงไม่ดีแน่ครับ เพราะนอกจากอ่านไม่รู้เรื่องแล้ว ถ้าปรับแต่งจนอ่านรู้เรื่อง ภาษาที่ออกมาอาจดูแข็งๆ แปลกๆ ไม่เหมือนแปลอย่างเดียว
ในส่วนของคนจ้างนั้น ก็ต้องบอกว่าอย่าเห็นแก่ราคาถูกอย่างเดียวครับ ต้องดูที่คุณภาพ และชื่อเสียงด้วย เพราะเดี๋ยวนี้มีประกาศแปลเอกสารราคาถูก เต็มไปหมด ลูกค้าก็หลงเชื่อไปจ้างแปลกันมาก สุดท้ายเอางานมาใช้ไม่ได้ ต้องมาแก้เอง หรืออย่างแย่ก็ต้องไปจ้างใหม่ เสียเงินสองต่อ เสียเวลา พลาดส่งงานไม่ทันไปก็มีเยอะแยะ หรือที่แย่กว่านั้นก็อาจจะพลาดการสื่อสาร เพราะตีความหมายผิด ยิ่งเป็นเอกสารที่ต้องการความแน่นอน เป๊ะแล้วยิ่งไปกันใหญ่ เช่นเอกสารกฎหมาย หรือจดหมายติดต่อทางการต่างๆ เพราะฉะนั้น ต้องจ้างคนแปลที่ไว้ใจได้นะครับ อย่าไปเห็นแก่ราคาที่ถูกอย่างเดียว ของใช้คุณอาจหลับหูหลับตาใช้ได้ แต่งานแปลไม่ได้นะครับ ต้องเลือกที่คุณภาพ และความน่าไว้วางใจก่อนอันดับแรก

Although BeeBee's long diatribe wraps around an advertisement for translations services, I am not deleting his post because 1. it contains a good discussion of the quality of the products of Google Translate (or lack thereof) and 2. it makes a good reading exercise for us students of the Thai language.

As to the substance of the OP's comments, I think we all agree that Google Translate, and its Microsoft counterpart, Bing, leave a lot to be desired when compared to human translation. On the other hand, Google Translate is like a dog walking on its hind legs -- its not that it is done well, it is amazing that it is done at all.

I understand that Google Translate works much better within the group of Western European languages. Can someone verify that?

Well I do believe it works better with Western European language, but I hardly ever used it.

I could however compare English, German, French (at least to some extent) and Thai if you give me a specific text.

I know some Thai friends who don't speak German get along well with Google Translate and actually manage most tasks with it (English-German! Not Thai-German)

For me... with the limited samples I had, it was always easy to figure out if a text was written by a native speaker or a program. There are usually a lot of small mistakes, however it is possible to understand texts just by using Google Translator (within European languages - I actually used French to German sometimes for some French homework for university).

Didn't we have a huge thread on this issue a while ago? I think I tried some translations back then

One amusing way to examine the failings of Google Translate on a regular basis is an extension to the Google Chrome browser called 'Language Immersion for Chrome'.

Set the language to Thai and the immersion level to 'intermediate', and it will try to translate about 50% of the words in any Web page you visit, into Thai.

The results are sometimes useful, but generally comical.

Although you have used language which I can understand, I am convinced that I could not write it.
Unfortunately this site is not much interested in putting English into Thai, we are devoted to understanding Thai and putting it into English.

I totally agree that Google Translate is not at all helpful when it comes to translating English into Thai. Thai does not have many explicit grammar rules like English, French, Japanese or pretty much most languages in the world but at the same time, you cannot just say whatever either. And this is why Thai is easy (not so many grammar rules) and difficult (because it's hard to speak naturally) at the same time. To be able to speak and write Thai correctly and naturally, you will need to read and listen to Thai as much as possible and learn to speak like Thai people. That's the only way. There's no shortcut. Moreover, we have countless and countless of words that are used to express emotions and a lot of those words do not even exist in English or any other language. I used to play with Google Translate just for fun and I remember the translation came out almost ridiculous. For example, if you type in "How are you?", Google will translate it as "คุณเป็นอย่างไร". Even a basic greeting sentence does not work, imagine a full text! I think it does work better for western languages but still, there are a lot of mistakes. I use Google Translate only with the languages that I know quite well but still need some help with so when Google tells me something strange, I know what to do with it or how to change the weird part so that it is correct. I do not recommend anyone to use Google Translate unless you know the language you want to get translated well enough and just need some help from Google The best way to get an English text translated into Thai is to ask your Thai friend to help you translate or post your question in this forum (^O^)/*

I personally only use Google Translate to translate individual Thai words, but never full sentences or phrases. Then I just form my own sentences.

There are Western European languages, and then there are Western European languages... The limitations - not to say uselessness - of Google Translate is readily seen by entering German text, to be rendered into English.

The website by Catherine Wentworth; women learning Thai (and some men too), has a post which she's carried over for several years since Google Translates added Thai as a language choice. Here's her "Fifth Google Translate Challenge;

She did it as a comparison to see if over time Google got any better. Remember Google Translates was originally designed as a "user correcting" interface. By that I mean users could suggest better translations for words/phrases as opposed to what came up automatically. Now with that feature (and IF google paid any attention to what users offered) you'd imagine over the intervening years it would have "self corrected" or at least gotten better with super common stuff.

Alas, that does not appear to be the case at all.. Her posts show it only got marginally better, if that. Now with the advent of "chat-speak-thai" where it's purposely misspelled it's so far off the mark as to be even more nonsensical that it is ususally . Plus if who ever is typing thai leaves out a character or misspells a word by accident there is no "predictive questioning" like you see when you type Thai into Google's Search Engine and get their "did you mean this instead?" prompt .

As far as translation services scattered around Bangkok. For anything other than "boiler plate" English to Thai or Thai to English; like marriage documents, passport translations, or rudimentary form-like stuff, they almost universally suck !!

I took a short paragraph written in English to three translation companies scattered near Embassies in Bangkok. Before I did this I already had a competent Thai translate into really coherent and understandable written Thai and I had already plugged into both Bing and Google Translates too.

The results were comical and horrifying at the same time.

Believe me the sample I wanted translated into Thai was NOT hard core English, just common everyday terms, no tricky idioms etc. One place even gave me a direct Google Translates "rip" printed on their letter head albeit with a different font and tried to pawn that off as their own translation!

I've found translators who can seamlessly go from English to Thai and vice versa possess near native speaking abilities in both languages! Those kind of people are thin on the ground .. They know how much a meaning can "warp" in Thai given context, and understand the subtleties of idiomatic expressions in both languages. That's why really good proficient ones can command a premium price.

I think I'd rather have a native English speaker who's pretty darned proficient in Thai rather than a native Thai speaker who's pretty darned proficient in English, but that's just me.

Still, an interesting read none the less. . . .
