ทะเลสาบโบเดิน near โตนเลสาบ?

Postby Thomas » Sun May 12, 2019 8:20 am

Yesterday I made a remark in a talk with my sister-in-law (who is bilingual Thai-German but speaking few English). My remark (using German) was:

Yes, I've studied two semesters law at the university of Constance. True!

This remark caused a talk with her with at least 1000 misunderstandings. At the end I concluded, angry and entirely confused:

Thus, สาบ is of Latin origin and derives from sapere. Ok! But I never studied law in พนมเปญ near "lake" โตนเลสาบ.

I did swear never to ask for the etymology of a term - but today ...

What is the etymology of สาบ?

The clue I found today for the misunderstanding with my sister-in-law is this entry of RID:

สาบ ๔ /สาบ/ {Khmer: สาบ ว่า จืด}

Yes, I know what a ปลาน้ำจืด is.

Unfortunately, however, the German term "die Lake" does not mean "the lake", rather น้ำเค็ม.

Die Lake Konstanz? Near Phnom Pehn? :? :? :?
There are three kinds of people: Those who can count and those who cannot.

สาบ 'musty smell; cockroach' seems to come from Proto-Tai - it's found in Northern Tai.

The word for 'to know' is ทราบ, and seems to be restricted to the Thai-Lao area.
