Word/phrase lists

Postby bifftastic » Sun Feb 05, 2012 2:20 am

I have a suggestion. :)

Would it be possible to add the function of a word or phrase list? I often search the dictionary, which is a wonderful resource by the way, and find words or phrases that I would like to revise. Currently, I have to make a note of them (and then lose the note!), or try and remember them. Is there any way that a function could be added to the site so that I could save them into a list for my future reference?

Thanks in advance,

Biff

You could use EXCEL and save all you wish as a personal dictionary.
I did that and have now more than 35.000 word and phrases in about 10 years.

Even better, used Google Documents - spreadsheets - to create an Excel-like spreadsheet. And, these documents are entirely free. They can be saved in your Google on-line account so you will never lose them.

Thanks David, I will explore that option.

How would I save words or phrases? At the moment, I only see the option to 'right-click, save link as...' and then I get the option to save as a web page, that's not exactly what I'm looking for.

Your help, as always, is appreciated,

Biff

You can copy and paste words and phrases from any document or site to the Google Spreadsheets.
you just have to select (right-click and drag) the words you want to copy, or the whole document.

I'm having second thoughts about the use of computers in learning -- I think they're a fabulous tool, but I think they can be over-used.

For example, the core of my learning is a daily run through my flashcards (I normally get asked 80 questions a day out of 4000 cards). And while I know these words in this learning environment, I cannot dredge them up quickly enough for conversational purposes. It's something to do with context, I think.

Also, computers are great for storing volumes of information, but if you are not careful, you don't review a lot of that material --there's simply too much, and so it ends up being of little use.

So I'm going to add a paper notebook to my learning resources, like I did with languages in the past. Notebooks are full of accidental context; you have to make the physical effort to write the words (which may be good imprinting in itself); and you often end up reviewing the material when you flick through the notebook to find a new page to write on.

I carry around a little Moleskin book to jot words, phrases, and sentences in. Great old-style tool.
