Let's Learn New word

Postby Passerby » Sun Jun 08, 2003 8:58 pm

This session we will work with the word น่า

This word is an adverb, when added as prefix to another word (verb), it put in the possitive weight leaning toward the action word that following it, means "worth it" or "enticing" or "allure"
Note: If the verb is a negative sense word, it work the opposite.

We will begin with with the consonant and move on to the next one each day.

น่ากิน good to eat
น่ากอด worth to hug
น่ารัก worth to love, use for
something lovely, cute, pleasant to look
at or to hear.

น่าเกลียด hatable, ugly, not pleasant
to look at or to hear.
น่าโกรธ enticing to be angry

Feel free to add and comment to these words.

I like these two:

น่าสนใจ - Interesting
น่าเบื่อ - Boring
Also,
น่าสงสาร - Pitiful
Can น่า be added as a prefix to any Thai verb?Or would certain Thai verbs sound strange?
Here's one I made up,and learnt a new word in the process, does it make any sense?
น่าสร้าง - Buildable/worth building?
I like the idea of this thread, look forward to the next one :)

น่าสร้าง - Buildable/worth building?

Dear Spacemaff,

Sorry, I goofed.

You are a very intelligent man. You caught on very fast. You make any teacher proud.

Yes, the above is correct. You use it in the situation
ie. two people may be discussing an idea of building something (anything) or looking at a plan. If one was pleased with the idea, he could say น่าสร้าง.

But one thing to remember is that it is a good idea not to make a quick translation (pairing words) without understand the root meaning before finding another word to pair it.
Why, because often the word do not reflect the true meaning.

Agent,

"วายุภกษ์". is misspelled. It should be "วายุภักษ์".
which is a name of an imiginary bird in Thai classical novel, วรรณคดี.

วายุ Wind, storm, god of wind
ภักษ์ to eat, to consume, food

Can you tell me how was it used in the paragraph?
I am curious as why it even appeared in the newspaper.
