Good news:
You don't need to know many big words to understand everyday written Thai.

Bad news:
Using simple construction and easy words, it is quite difficult even for native speakers of Thai to write Thai sentences without any ambiguity.

Another brainteaser for you:

The Thai language is so enigmatic. If you are a sensitive and critical listener or reader, you can almost always point out any ambiguity or logical flaws in many Thai sentences.

When your close friend says something ambiguous, and you tease him by giving a wrong response intentionally. Both of you could end up with a good laugh. But if you do this to a stranger, especially at the wrong place and the wrong time, he might turn quite nasty.

See the dialog below (a discussion that truly took place), for example:

Somebody started a thread (on a Thai forum) saying: ทำไมเดี๋ยวนี้นักเรียนนายร้อยไม่คัดคนเก่งเเบบหัวกะทิ เก่งเทพๆไปเรียนเเล้วเหรอ

My response:
คุณถาม
"ทำไมเดี๋ยวนี้นักเรียนนายร้อยไม่คัดคนเก่งเเบบหัวกะทิ เก่งเทพๆไปเรียนเเล้วเหรอ"
เราตอบ
โรงเรียนนายร้อยเป็นคนคัดนักเรียน เราไม่รู้นโยบายเขา แต่คนที่เป็นนักเรียนนายร้อยเป็นแค่นักเรียน ไม่มีสิทธิและหน้าที่ไปคัดนักเรียนที่ไหนให้ไปเรียนโรงเรียนายร้อยหรอก
เห็นไหมว่าถ้าเขียนภาษาไทยไม่ดี คนอ่านจะ “ตีความผิด” ได้

His reply (obviously he doesn't take it as a joke): ความคิดเห็นเเบบนี้ “ไม่ได้เรียกว่าตีความผิด” เเต่เรียกว่า “กวนบาทา” มากกว่า

Explanation:
In this sentence, ทำไมเดี๋ยวนี้นักเรียนนายร้อยไม่คัดคนเก่งเเบบหัวกะทิ เก่งเทพๆไปเรียนเเล้วเหรอ, the verb “ไม่คัด” is performed by “the Military Academy”, which is omitted of course, hence ”นักเรียนนายร้อย” looks as if it functions as the subject.

So, what do you think about Thai reading comprehension?

Thanks for that story. I have two questions:

1. Perhaps this was a typing error. The writer may have meant to say,

"ทำไมเดี๋ยวนี้โรงเรียนนายร้อยไม่คัดคนเก่งเเบบหัวกะทิ เก่งเทพๆไปเรียนเเล้วเหรอ" The word คน serves as a direct object, and in effect a pronoun referencing "นักเรียนนายร้อย".

In other words, the ambiguity results from bad or erroneous writing, not from factors inherent in the language itself. Many writers of English make the same mistakes.

2. What is the meaning of "เก่งเทพๆ"?

1. The construction "ทำไมเดี๋ยวนี้นักเรียนนายร้อยไม่คัดคนเก่งเเบบหัวกะทิ เก่งเทพๆไปเรียนเเล้วเหรอ" is widely used by native speakers of Thai. In everyday conversation, the speaker's true intention is easily understood. Unfortunately, this construction occurs quite often in the official Thai language. The name of the game is "finding the invisible man". To avoid misinterpretation, you have to identify the subject which is often omitted.

2. "เก่งเทพๆ" means "as adept as a divine being".
