"ศึกอภิปราย"

Postby David and Bui » Sat Apr 28, 2012 1:40 am

Friends,

Please help me understand the following sentence:

ฝ่ายรัฐบาลและฝ่ายค้านต่างระดมกุนซือเข้าช่วยในศึกอภิปรายครั้งนี้

Does the use of "ศึก" in connection with "อภิปราย" imply that the debate will be fractious, contentious, and difficult? If so, the result would be,

"The government faction and the opposition each mobilized their advisers to help with the upcoming fractious debates."

Is my understanding correct? Thanks.

คุณเดวิดคะ

การอภิปรายเปรียบเหมือนการทำสงครามน้ำลายระหว่างฝ่ายค้านและฝ่ายรัฐบาล จึงต้องใช้คำว่า "ศึกอภิปราย"

ศึก is a battle.

"ศึกอภิปราย" - debate battle ?

What do you think?

คุณเดวิดครับ (ฮะแอ่ม!)

Code: Select all
ฝ่ายรัฐบาลและฝ่ายค้านต่างระดมกุนซือเข้าช่วยในศึกอภิปรายครั้งนี้

The government side and the opposition each mobilized their advisers to help them (win) the upcoming war of words.

Yes, as you said, "ศึก" in connection with "อภิปราย" imply that the debate will be fractious, contentious. Because it’s hard to see normal/lively/vigorous debates when those two parties confront each other.
However, I think the right translation should be:
The government parties/side and the opposition each mobilized their advisers to help them with the upcoming fierce/heated/intense debates.
Though this version seems to “add” some word (fierce/heated/intense) into the original text but still has the right meaning.

correct a word, sorry.
กุนซือ should be "counsellor" not "helper."

Khun Nan,

I wouldn't say "debate battle". มันไม่ค่อยชิ้นหู Although Thai uses two nouns together, I think that from the context, the primary noun is "debate" and "battle" describes the fact that the debate is likely to be "bloody" and that "punches will be thrown."

Thus, I like "fractious debates"; "debate with guns blazing"; "debate with slings and arrows" (with a tip of the hat to the Bard); "the debate will turn into a real Donnybrook (with a tip of the hat to the Irish); "a knock-down-and-drag-out debate".

ว่ายังไงครับ
