Winston Churchill Quote

Postby Toffeeman » Mon Jul 16, 2012 10:15 am

"When I was 16, I thought my parents knew nothing. When I was 21, I was shocked to discover how much they had picked up in the last 5 years."

This is one of many great quotes from Winston Churchill. I want to translate in into Thai. Here is my attempt:

What do you think?

In "When I was 16, I thought my parents knew nothing. When I was 21, I was shocked to discover how much they had picked up in the last 5 years.", if Winston Churchill implied that he had been ignorant because he was a young boy of 16, and that he had learned and realized a great deal within 5 years afterward, the sentence can be rendered as,

"ไม่รู้เรื่อง" is used in the situation when one is innocent in a particular situation.

Thx Pirin for replying. Yes you have the correct understanding. It's all about the ignorance of youth when they actually think they are wise and the older generation know nothing. Thx for the understanding of "ไม่รู้เรื่อง" as this is one of my stock phrases that always seems to get a laugh when I use it. I guessed that I was using it out of context a bit.

Just a question. It seems a little wordy. Can it be made shorter without losing it meaning. Eg can I drop the กับ and ท่าน in the 1st sentence?
Do I need เอาซะเลย? I will be using this quote in a 30 minute presentation this weekend in a formal setting and if possible I dont want to read it. In otherwords I need to learn it by heart and therefore the simpler the better.
So could I say:

ได้และดีด้วยค่ะ because,"ตอนผมอายุ 16 ผมมองว่าพ่อกับแม่ท่านไม่รู้ ๆ อะไรเอาซะเลย" is rather conversational or informal.
