Please help me understand these two complex sentences with my suggestions for the English:

สำหรับมหาอำนาจต่างๆ ก็พอมองออกแล้วว่า ในระยะสามถึงห้าปีข้างหน้า ปัญหาพลังงานจะเป็นปัญหาใหญ่
If one looks three to five years into the future, the various superpowers will encounter major energy problems.

หลายประเทศสงวนแหล่งพลังงานภายในประเทศของตนไว้แต่ออกล่าหาแหล่งอื่น แม้จะอยู่ไกลสุดหล้าฟ้าเขียว
Many countries preserve their domestic power-producing natural resources while exploring [for resources] elsewhere, even those located very far away.

สำหรับมหาอำนาจต่างๆ ก็พอมองออกแล้วว่า = Various superpowers (not one) foresee and realize it.

Should the second sentence be in the same paragraph with the first,
หลายประเทศ = Many of them (or many of these superpowers);
สงวนแหล่งพลังงานภายในประเทศของตนไ ว้แต่ออกล่าหาแหล่งอื่น = not only ..... but also ..... .

Your translation of the second sentence is fine, Dave, in that the parts are well-interrelated.

Consider the first, though, in which it is implied that the fact of "the various superpowers ... encounter[ing] major energy problems" depends on the truth of whether or not "... one looks three to five years into the future."

One alternative might plausibly be:

"it should suffice to say that,in the foreseeable three-to-five years, problems of energy production for the various superpowers will be of major proportions."

Other alternatives can be considered as well, I'm sure.

Thank you both for your replies. I guess my problem with the first sentence, as you both perceived, is the identification of the noun subject of the sentence and its associated primary verb:

"สำหรับมหาอำนาจต่างๆ ก็พอมองออกแล้วว่า ในระยะสามถึงห้าปีข้างหน้า ปัญหาพลังงานจะเป็นปัญหาใหญ่"

Seems to me that the possible subjects include,

1. "มหาอำนาจต่างๆ" and its verb "มองออกแล้วว่า"- However, the sentence structure makes this sentence only the object of the preposition สำหรับ.
2. The author of the article with the the associated verb "มองออกแล้วว่า"
3. "ปัญหาพลังงาน" with its associated verb "จะเป็น".

If the subject were as in 1, then one w ould expect the sentence to be simply stated,

"พอมองออกในระยะสามถึงห้าปีข้างหน้า มหาอำนาจต่างๆ ก็จะเห็นว่า ปัญหาพลังงานจะเป็นปัญหาใหญ่"

Khun Pirin's suggestion seems to favor "มหาอำนาจต่างๆ" as the subject, even though this subject noun is not explicitly related to the verb "มองออก".

Am I understanding your suggestion correctly?

Because I haven't seen the whole source of the sentence, I treated this sentence as one from an informative article. That's why I treat 'ก็พอมองออก" as the verb of 'มหาอำนาจต่างๆ'. However, if the article is an argumentative one, you're right, "มองออก" is the idea of the writer.

สุดหล้าฟ้าเขียว very far away seems a bit lame. Does it really say no more than ไกลมาก?
สุดหล้าฟ้าเขียว ว. ไกลมากที่สุด เช่น เขาหนีไปอยู่สุดหล้าฟ้าเขียว ยากที่ ใครจะตามไปถึง, สุดขอบฟ้า ก็ว่า.
