This shows how difficult translation is.
It needs a real grammarian to say how may and but work here. I am not a grammarian but I know what this means to me and think I know what อาจ means.
Is this an unknown situation and a known situation joined by 'but'?
I may be wealthier than you but he is wealthier than me.
I am not sure it is a simple case of stating that A is a guess but B is a fact.
The English I hear is an excuse.
I am wealthier than you but (it does not follow that I have to act in a certain way), there are many wealthier than me( who don't act in that way).

I think 'may' doesn't mean 'may' here. I think that it means that what follows is not a premiss (logical reason) for what has been suggested I do.
I see that all my attempt does is to remove อาจ from the sentence, I doubt it makes any more sense.

I do seem to be going through a very picky phase at the moment so excuse me if I am also becoming word blind.

Looks like รวย always needs an object doesn't it? Although the dictionary here just has it as an adjective which brings us back to the old verb adj argument.
เขาเป็นคนรวย Thai- adj เขารวยเงิน Thai- verb เขารวย English -adjective or intransitive verb.

I can't help feeling that life would be a lot simpler if we stuck to Thai and tried to forget the English. Poor old Thai language is buried by English.
Too late now I suppose.
