In a recent Khao Sot discussion of the rift between two men, the problem was said to be caused by the action of one man, who had: "แอบตีท้ายครัว" the other man.

One dictionary had the rather clumsy translation about "secretly befriending the wife or family of someone else for personal gain."

In the particular Khao Sot story, I know that in fact one of the men had a secret affair with the wife of the other man.

Can someone explain the origin and basis of this phrase, and in what range of circumstances it might be used?

I am surprised that no body looks it up. ท้ายครัว (ปาก) ว. ทางภรรยา เช่น เข้าท้ายครัว หมายความว่าเข้าทางภรรยา.
since ทางภรรยา is two nouns it can't mean anything until the two words are researched. I did this and ;

I have blacked the possibilities.
ภรรยา means wife.

I favour ช่องภรรยา and since the RID is no help with ตี I think that it means 'To secretly hit on the wife'.
Since the first post had this as a definition I think it is fairly safe.

Thanks Pirin. The right interpretation by a different route. I guess we are supposed to read ทางภรรยา as via the wife.
Do you have any idea how เข้าท้ายครัว หมายความว่าเข้าทางภรรยา. should be read? Two nouns ทางภรรยา have to make sense because it is in the RID so which use of ทาง is this one?
Edit; ท้ายครัว (ปาก) this says that it is spoken and ทางภรรยา is the grammatical form.

Because the word 'ตี' is used, I believe that idiom might be used metaphorically to indicate one of the clever tactics a man might use to overwhelm the other.

To me, this is somewhat like "Attacks & Offensives".
