Thai translation of "Pro Consul" job title

Postby mhollow » Sun Feb 26, 2012 10:27 am

Hi all,

Does anyone know the correct Thai translation for "Pro Consul" (as in a specific job title for a Consular official)? Since I don't really know what the difference is between the duties of an Consul, Vice Consul or Pro Consul I'm a bit stuck. I'd appreciate your suggestions/help.

RID offers these consular ranks in it's definition of กงสุล:

กงสุลที่มีตําแหน่งเป็นหัวหน้าสถานกงสุลมี ๔ ระดับ คือ กงสุลใหญ่ กงสุล รองกงสุล และตัวแทนฝ่ายกงสุล.

My educated guesses at translations are:

กงสุลใหญ่ -> Consul-General
กงสุล -> Consul
รองกงสุล -> Vice Consul???
ตัวแทนฝ่ายกงสุล -> lit. Consul's Representative. Maybe Pro Consul???

Could anyone confirm or correct these translations? If so, a link or other reference to your source material would be great for future use.

Many thanks,
Mark

Hi Pirin,

Many thanks for your response and the link.

While I was out shopping yesterday I found "proconsul" listed in the New Model English-Thai Dictionary (ISBN 9789741665891). It gives a description of "ผู้ที่ทำหน้าที่แทนกงสุล". So "ตัวแทนฝ่ายกงสุล" seems good enough to me. :)
