hello friends
you may be know the meaning of กรรม = karma = action.
but you know even my Thai friends are still a little bit confused about > กรรมเก่า, เวรกรรม, บาปกรรม.
those phrases are different but same with กรรม, it's all about people's action and it's my topic today.
i have a little knowledge but give me a chance to tell you. thank you very much
...first, i must say thank you to David and Bui because he gave me idea to write this post.
กรรม be known for people's action or sin depend on expression of sentences.
but in general karma means act, action, so Thai people believe in "as you sow, so you reap"
(anyway i did not say all Thai people are good.)
do good deeds or evil deeds, both are = กรรม or karma
sin or missing the mark = บาปกรรม (negative meaning)
and one's past deeds both good and evil deeds = กรรมเก่า (negative meaning)
retribution, revenge or hatred = เวรกรรม (very negative meaning)
เวรกรรม is the most dangerous for everyone who believe in it.
because it means you are hunted by something which is your past life that you don't know.
make me think about Revenge (TV Series)
examples for กรรม, บาปกรรม, เวรกรรม, กรรมเก่า
ฉันสร้างมาทั้งกรรมดีและไม่ดี = both good deed and evil deed that i did.
ฉันทำบาปทำกรรมมา = i did something bad .
เมื่อไรจะหมดเวรหมดกรรมสักที = when my retribution will passed away.
มันคงเป็นกรรมเก่าของฉัน = it's my past deeds (negative meaning)
bye bye
lunch now

I agree with evil deeds is called = กรรม or karma.
but good deeds I think people called it "บุญ" or merit instead.
Thank you for clarifying.

thank you so much for your comment Sorawit
i really feel alone here lol
it's true that บุญ known as good deeds.
ิบุญ is giving and giving is good deeds, right?
but the meaning of บุญ is not good deeds.
บุญ means something happened and filled up their heart to be happy.
บุญ แปลว่า สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในจิตใจ แล้วทำให้มีความสุข หัวใจพองโต
http://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B8%9A% ... 8%E0%B8%8D
http://www.buddhadasa.com/freethinkbook/boonkusol.html
we do good deeds = we get บุญ
we can say we do บุญ or make a merit to be happy in our heart.
example i gave a poor girl some money to pay her tuition fee. after that i feel glad, delight or enjoy = ปิติ
(something filled up in my heart = ปิติ made from บุญ)
but กุศล is different
กุศล means แผ้วถาง or clean passions or desires from our mind or heart to stop the causes of sorrow.
example.. she lets her husband go with another girl easily. because he does not love her anymore.
and she finally found she is happy because she throw the cause of her sorrow away. (get it?)
it's all about giveing
บุญ give to be happy
กุศล give to let it be... by nature, by time. so กุศล big greater than บุญ
anyway we can say it in the same time. ทำบุญทำกุศล, สร้างบุญสร้างกุศล
ิbecause both are ok in the meaning of giving.
so...
all good deeds or evil deeds are กรรม karma (actions)
in Thai language must have both กรรมดี good deeds and กรรมชั่ว evil deeds.
i love stories about บุญ กรรม เวรกรรม ผีสาง
but my knowledge is not good, hope this helps.

Sukiyaki wrote:David and Bui wrote: "ผู้ร้ายสมัยนี้ไม่กลัวบาปกรรม เพราะบังอาจขโมยของศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่เคารพบูชา"
Is the following translation appropriate?
"ผู้ร้าย/ สมัยนี้/ ไม่กลัว/ บาปกรรม
เพราะ/ บังอาจ/ ขโมย/ ของศักดิ์สิทธิ์/ ที่เคารพบูชา"
As I feel, that is ok David.
But we can appropriate it to be nicer in 2 ways
Because this sentence make from 2 level of vocabulary so we can make the same pattern of these
words to parallel this structure.
1. Formal way.
“ผู้ร้ายสมัยนี้ไม่เกรงกลัวต่อบาป เพราะบังอาจขโมย ของ/สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์”
ผู้ราย is formal word but ไม่กลัวบาปกรรม is informal
it’s more appropriated If you want to filled up this way to speech or writing report .
but you don’t need to have ..ที่เคารพบูชา..
Because ของสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ it’s completed in the meaning of worship by itself.
But if we must emphasize on how much important of the holy for peoples.
we should say ผู้ร้ายสมัยนี้ไม่เกรงกลัวต่อบาป เพราะบังอาจขโมยสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ซึ่งเป็น ที่เคารพบูชา (ของประชาชน)
2. Informal way
“คนร้ายสมัยนี้ไม่กลัวบาป เพราะกล้าขโมยของศักดิ์สิทธิ์”
or คนร้ายสมัยนี้ไม่กลัวบาป เพราะกล้าขโมยของศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ที่คน เคารพบูชา
คนร้าย / ไม่กลัวบาป both are informal.
this is an informal way to talk about this topic with anyone.
Don’t need any ซึ่ง for informal way, but use ที่คน ที่เขา ที่เรา เคารพบูชากัน instead
Everything I told you I hold from the principles of Thai language.
And the principles of Thai writing both formal and informal. we should hold 3C’s
Clearly, Concisely and Completely.
(but you don't need to believe me perhaps you can find any better principle book later )
Such as example from my Thai writing exercise book.
71. เขาพบศพคนตาย เพศชาย...
ศพ = corpse/ so you don’t need any word to follow ศพ in the same meaning of a dead body.
77. “ทุกคนจะร่วมรับประทานอาหารเย็นพร้อมกัน”
It very ok if you will say this quote with your friend.
But in the formal way such as Thesis, Text books “ทุกคนจะร่วมรับประทานอาหารเย็นพร้อมกัน”
It’s wordy, redundant with the same meaning of 2 word.
