I've only visited Chonburi, and all the locals said for example หอยแมงภู่ and never หอยแมลงภู่. It seems their local pronunciation prefers to merge syllables beginning with l into the previous syllable? In this case it seems the sound change is pha lee > phlee > phee.

Its common for many to merge constanants. I was confused for along time when I first got there that someone was talking about fish but didn't say ปลา, but said ปา. My tone discrimination wasn't as good then so I thought he was talking about the jungle. As I lived there longer, I started to say fish the same way too.

Very well could be, but I think its the lazyness of human nature. I grew up in Utah and it is common to hear them to drop the T's in the middle of words with a glottal stop. So one would have a cabin in the the moun'in and go to the city of Lay'on. Of course one might say I'm goin to the moun'in near lay'on. Sounds weird to some, but this is the dialect I grew up with. Now almost everyone can still spell it fine, but if among those who are less literate, it does get spelled wrong because they don't know better.

So I always found it interesting hearing how Thai people get lazy and form their little lazy dialects. I just remembered another one from when I was new to Thailand. Someone told me I had to wait but the รอ sounded like ลอ to me. And since I didn't know better I thought they said หล่อ. So I was a bit confused why I had to be handsome.
