Hi,

My flatmate is getting a Thai tattoo in two days, but she used online translators to come up with the tattoo. I study French, so I know how unreliable electronic translators can be. I just thought I'd check on a forum to make sure hers means what she wants it to mean before she has it tattooed to her body!

I don't have whatever she came up with in Thai, but the English is "Live well, laugh often, love always".

Can anyone suggest a translation? I'd be very grateful. The tattoo has the potential to be very beautiful, because Thai script is so beautiful, but if it were incorrect, I feel it would be such a shame.

Thanks for your translation. I put it through a translator to see how it corresponds to the original and it says something like "Good and beautiful smiles are coming", which sounds very poetic, but I wonder if there is any way of staying very loyal to the original without it sounding weird in Thai? The phrase has special meaning for her.

"Live well. Laugh often. Love always."

Perhaps it's easier to translate like that? It was advice that an old teacher gave us when we left school and my flatmate always remembered it.

I do believe that translating is keeping the meaning of the original text the best a translator can.
In addition, if this is going to be on a person's skin permantly, I don't think I dare suggest anything weird.

I believe I expressed myself badly. I in no way meant that your translation was weird or that you mistranslated. I don't know any Thai, so it would be very obnoxious of me to presume to judge any translation. Your translation looks very beautiful. I study French, so I know that translating is an art and that expression in one language is very different to expression in another.

I will show this to my flatmate. I know she has a translation, but I'm sure it's bad because it's from Google translate. Can you tell me roughly what the above translation corresponds to in English so I have an idea of how close to the English it is? I tried to check it on online translators, but I know they are inaccurate.

Also, and do excuse my ignorance, is '~' a part of the translation, or does it begin with 'อ'?

As I say, I don't know any Thai. I'm asking only because '~' looks different to the other letters and I don't know if it's a hyphen or a dash or if it is a part of the translation.

When I write a phrase in Thai which is, "ความขัดแย้งทางการเมืองที่มีกลิ่นอายของความรุนแรง" to mean, "the violence inherent in the political conflict", I can put it to find out how it is translated in the machine translation.
Here's what I got for "ความขัดแย้งทางการเมืองที่มีกลิ่นอายของความรุนแรง":

Please allow me to give you my point of view as a French native (retired translator) who has been learning thai language for 10 years : Khun Pirin's translation อยู่อย่างดี มีรอยยิ้ม ปริ่มใจรัก is very good and using any machine translation to test it cannot work.

I particularly like ปริ่มใจรัก

Dedicated to somebody you know well, using the familiar second person "tu"

5- Sois heureux, ris souvent, aime toujours
Dedicated to somebody you have to show some respect, using the second person "vous"
or to more than one person :
