I think I might choose แทน 'in place of' :

ผมไปซื้อของแทนแม่นิ่ครับ

I would use แทนแม่ in case of impediment of my mother, on behalf of my mother.

What would happen if you took away กำลัง would it be okay? As it has อยู่ at the end to show its happening now

I don't think "แทน" is appropriate in this context.

I would use "แทน" in these examples;
