Anyone familiar with the northeast dialect?

I'm struggling with the meaning of "สิม" in this sentence:

"ถ้าใครไม่ได้ครบหลวงพ่อจะเอาไปขังไว้ในสิม"

I'm wondering if it means "วัด" or "โบสถ์"?

Hi Simon,
it seems to be one of those multi layer roof buildings in the wat grounds. I'm not sure if it is a Lao word but I would guess so as this is a photo taken in Lao

Thank you Khun Nan and Khun Gra-ding,

Here’s another couple of sentences from the book I’m reading:

นักเรียนทั้งหมดมีห้าชั้นคือชั้นมูล ขี้หมูไหล ชั้น ป. ๑ ป. ๒ ป. ๓ และ ป.

ก็อยู่ชั้นขี้หมูไหลนั่นแหละ

I wonder what the meaning behind “ชั้นขี้หมูไหล” is? Perhaps something to do with an altrnative meaning of the word “มูล”?

Khun Simon kha,

ชั้นขี้มูลไหล or มูลศึกษา means elementary education. In the past, we didn't have to study 3 years in kindergarten, only one year before first grade which is called ชั้นขี้มูลไหล or มูลศึกษา

One of the definition of มูล is ต้น, รากฐาน (root, origin, foundation).

Hi Simon, according to a text I got from the missus ขี้หมูไหล describes someone who never finishes what they start, leave things half done and go off and start something else.
How this relates to the story you are reading I don't know but maybe it applies to Nan's extra years at kindergarten as being thought of as a waste of time as they are usually playing around and not actually finishing any school work.

Tinking too mut again maybe? Someone will put me back in my box.

Just to bump this post along a bit, has anyone else heard the ขี้หมูไหล expression used in the context my missus offered up to me or is she once again leading me down that well trodden garden path.

A while back I seem to remember reading here at TL.com or Thaivisa's Thai language forum (can't locate it now) about the phrase; "ฝนตกขี้หมู่ไหล"... it was some kind of proverb or something... can't recall the meaning.

The full saying is "ฝนตกขี้หมูไหล คนจัญไรมาพบกัน". It means "bad people happen to be together at one place at the same time".

I don'g think that the meaning of "ขี้หมูไหล" in this proverb would be the same as "ชั้นขี้หมูไหล" (ชั้นเตรียมประถม, ชั้นมูลศึกษา, ชั้นป.มูล) though.
