Question: How many words make up the most frequently used words in Thai ? In English it's about 800, according to The Orthological Institute London. Yet, other resources say 2,500 words. I won't bore you with the list. : - ) My point is every language has words that are used more than others. Example; THE, OF, AND, TO, IN, A/AN, THAT and IS make up approximately 33% of all written and spoken English. Are you following me? With these nine words you would know almost half of the English language! 100
Words make up 50%! Theory: If you can learn the most frequently used words in Thai or any language for that matter, you mastered that language! I say let’s startup a list and post it on this web site. Any suggestions ?

That's actually not just at theory. It proves to be a very good tool in learning a new language. Just try learning Chinese characters without it. I often wish I had such a list, so that I could more quickly master the words I come across most often.

I'm very familiar with the English corpus concept. Glad you raised this topic. Apart from the T-E & E-T Translations, I'm also excited to join you on this.

According to my favorite dictionary, Collins COBUILD, the most frequently used words in English are called "collocation" or "frequent English word combinations." A few years ago, there were 140,000 English collocations. COBUILD extracted those collocations from its unique "corpus" of 200 million English words. However, "in January 2002 the latest release of the corpus amounted to 450 million words and it continues to grow with the constant addition of new material" (Bank of English)

Macmillan English Dictionary stated that: "The most frequently used 7,500 words in English make up about 90 percent of all the language that you will ever come across. Eighty percent of the time we use only 2,500 words" (Gwyneth Fox, Associate Editor, Macmillan English Dictionary -- from this URL).

its a shame this idea died, i think it would have been a great learning tool, I remember a few times in Thailand helping Thai ppl with English and some of the words they would try learn would be really obscure words that ive probably never used which leads me to wonder whether iam doing the same thing when i learn a new Thai word

learning a list of common Thai words before or while learning grammar and sentence structure makes sense to me, whats the point in constructing a sentence with words that Thai ppl hardly, if ever, use. A Thai person i was helping with English in Chiang mai tried to construct a sentence with the word "acherontic", I had never heard this word before and have still never heard it in use, the only reason i know what it means is because i had to go onto the internet to make sure it wasn't a typo in the dictionary he was using. I would guess about 20% of the words he was trying to learn were "expert" level, the kind of words that you would use in an intellectual discussion to convey your point very accurately or just to show off, these words were way ahead of his level of english (and mine) which at best was intermediate and iam convinced iam doing the same with some of the Thai words i learn. It would just be really nice to know if iam wasting my time trying to learn words that I'll never hear someone use and for a beginner this would be a very useful thing to have. A list with 20 or so common verbs, 20 common adjectives and 20 common nouns and so on just to get started on the right track and to be able to make sentences that you can actually use in real life situations. instead of learning words i dont need like eg "Veciferous" i want to learn words i do need like all the words used in this post apart from "Veciferous" and "acherontic"

Wow, thanks for posting this. I have McFarland's 1944 dictionary--is this list from there?

Also, there seem to be some glitches in the list, especially viewed with Windows Vista, where illegal Unicode character order for Thai appears garish. But that doesn't explain the asterixes (*) in the middle of some words...? What does the asterix represent?

If we can clean up this list, I think it would be a good start for highlighting words of importance out of the 29,000 in the dictionary here on this web site.
