I was told by my Thai friends that the colloquial way to talk about drinking (water or otherwise) was to say กินน้ำ instead of ดื่ม but I see no examples of its use on this site or elsewhere (dictionaries, etc.), save for a few idioms. Are my Thai friends just weird (like me ) or am I misunderstanding something?

Its quite normal to hear people using the word กิน to describe drinking, but maybe my friends/family/neighbours are just as weird as yours!

Yes, right- but here I'm referring to the adding of น้ำ specifically... I just figured I would see it used here as a common expression. It doesn't seem to fit exactly into the 'slang' category...

I love that guy! There is nothing better than humor to aid the learning process... But, actually, I think Thais (at least the ones I hang with) are already aware of this linguistic difference, and thus the use of กินน้ำ rather than simply using กิน when referring to the act of drinking... ดื่ม seems to be almost exclusively held for the toast...
