| Syndicate The site news portion of thai-language.com supports RSS syndication, a standard format for Internet newsfeeds which can be automatically read by a variety of clients. With an RSS client program, you can aggregate news headlines and articles from multiple news providers into a single newsreader. This allows you to customize the news that you want to see. You may be seeing the orange  icon on more and more web sites these days—this shows that the
site supports RSS syndication.Our newsfeed covers details of the development activities at thai-language.com, which you might be interested in if you're a big fan of our site, or if you want to be the first to know about our new and upcoming features. Of course, if you don't want to use RSS, you can always read the news right here. You may have also heard the term 'blog' or 'weblog.' These terms refer to content management software packages which are installed on a server in order to manage news (or article) -oriented web sites. For our site, we are using one of the most popular packages, MovableType. Thanks to the authors of this open-source product for their great work. Getting Started If you already know about RSS, then you'll already know how to pick up our newsfeed. If you're new to RSS and want to give it a try, read on... A great place to start is at blogspace.com. After browsing that site, you might want to try either a standalone news reader like Feedreader (a free Windows app), or a system based on your web browser, like the popular Amphetadesk. There are many others to choose from also. Once you've got reader software, you're ready to aggregate the newsfeeds you're interested in. A huge collection of newsfeeds to choose from is available at syndic8.com. After you click on one of those orange XML icons, copy the URL from your browser. Then paste it into your news aggregator. RSS in Thai As of this writing (June 2003), there aren't many RSS feeds written in Thai. Our news feed (and the news archives) do have some Thai script in them occasionally, so I was interested in getting this to work properly. Unfortuntely, most of the RSS readers I tried did not support the TIS-620 character mapping, which is the most common encoding for Thai web pages on the Internet. In order to get Thai script to work, I had to use the UTF-8 encoding and use Unicode numeric-character escapes to render Thai. Some of the other Thai language feeds that are out there still attempt to use TIS-620, and these feeds will not aggregate with many popular readers. Although you don't have to worry about these technical details, it's important to know that RSS is an emerging, evolving, and developing (did I mention bleeding-edge?) part of the Internet which still needs work in some areas. |
