One of the more egregious words to come out of the current political turmoil is the word "บอยคอต" or "boycott." This term may be crowding out one of the great Thai metaphors "คว่ำบาตร" which is also being used by the media in this context. The RTI dictionary defines the term and explains it as:
ไม่ยอมคบค้าสมาคมด้วย, เดิมหมายถึงสังฆกรรมที่พระสงฆ์ประกาศลงโทษคฤหัสถ์ผู้ประทุษร้ายต่อศาสนาด้วยการไม่คบ ไม่รับบิณฑบาต เป็นต้น.
. . . to be unwilling to associate with or have social contact. The term originates in the punishment meted out by monks against laypersons who commits a religious violation. The monk will ignore the person and will not, for example, accepting food offered to him.
The term "คว่ำบาตร" literally means to turn the mouth of a monk's bowl down so that food cannot be placed inside.
