สุราเวศรี = Sulawesi?

Postby Thomas » Sat Jan 26, 2019 10:19 am

I came across this ... advertisement:

http://www.atlantis-jj.com/product/598/ ... ow-Rabbit-[Tylomelania-sp].html

On this page it is stated:

Snail-Yellow Rabbit [Tylomelania sp]หอยจากสุราเวศรี

What I know about the hoi/snail/rabbit under discussion is that this animal has/should have origin (จาก) from Lake Poso at Sulawesi.

According to the Thai Wikipedia Sulawesi is written in Thai letters ซูลาเวซี.

I still have not found a translation for สุราเวศรี (see above) but could this mean "Sulawesi" as well?

My question is: What means สุราเวศรี in the context of หอย Tylomelania?

Since eventually the link above may not work here again the full quotation:

รายระเอียดสินค้า : Snail-Yellow Rabbit [Tylomelania sp]
Snail-Yellow Rabbit [Tylomelania sp]หอยจากสุราเวศรี ตัวสีเหลือง ช่วยกำจัดของเสีย และลดแอมโมเนียที่สะสมอยู่ในตู้ โดยใช้ตัวยืดลงไปหาอาหารใต้ดิน สามารถเลี้ยงทั้งในตู้กุ้งเรดบี และกุ้งสุราเวศรีได้ เลี้ยงง่าย

In that context, สุราเวศรี is an island Sulawesi of Indonesia.
สุลาเวสี is not a common word and borrow from a foreign language, people tend to use their own version of spelling.
as it easy to understand the meaning, no one really cares about the correct(official) spelling.

I found that in Wikipedia they use the word "ซูลาเวซี" but in real life, I never encounter that spelling. most commonly found is "สุลาเวสี"

@ohmmo:

Thank you very much for your reply.

It helped in this second to explain our Thaiboy, living in Germany, how I once started to learn Thai.

I guess you agree that the usage of a PaliSanskrit (ศรี/zarI/si) and a proper Thai (สี/si) spelling makes differences in the context of advertisement, here a snail currently not entirely descrived by science ... so origin of the animal anyway debatable.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tylomelania

Many thanks again.

Thomas

P.S.: To speak about the origin of a term หอย-ซูลาเวซี ... ;)
