Listening for the Tone of One-Syllable Words

In this quiz, you'll listen to one-syllable words and identify the spoken tone. You can use this quiz to try the following:
  • If you've already studied the tone rules, see if you can pronounce the word, with the correct tone, before playing the audio file
  • Even if you haven't learned the tone rules, but you know the Thai alphabet, see if you can sound out the word
  • See if you know the meaning of the Thai word

Click on the speaker icon to listen to the word. Your control panel audio settings are used. Click the button to identify the tone.

Clicking on the Thai word will go to the dictionary entry and exit/reset the quiz.

The quiz continues indefinitely. Continue answering until you are answering correctly.

Some transcriptions used as answers in this quiz are generated programmatically and may not reflect correct Thai pronunciation. If you find errors, you may submit them by clicking on the 'correct' result word, and then using the correction link at the bottom of its dictionary page. In some cases, the audio pronunciation may not match the tone shown in the 'correct' result. This may also be due to an error in our algorithm although in rare cases it may be an incorrect pronunciation by the native Thai speaker. Please let use know about such problems if you discover them. Some of the audio clips are encoded with with Windows Media 9 Speech Codec, which has been a disappointing decision. If you experience distorted playback please make sure your Windows Media Player is up-to-date.
