Another interesting set of books (although perhaps more contemporary than what you are looking for) is a set of short biographies:
"The Last Siamese, Journeys in War and Peace" by Teddy Spha Palasthira and its Thai original "คนไทยใจสยาย" ดอย สภา ปรลเสถีย. Eavh volume is 350 baht, published by The Post Publishing Public Company Ltd. Interestingly for us language learners, the first biographical sketch is about So Sethaphutra, the creator of the great Thai-English dictionary.
