Spelling of Animal Sounds in Thai

Postby Kraam » Thu Jun 17, 2010 4:55 am

Does anyone know where I can get a list of animal sounds in Thai? I know that อู๊ด (or some variation of that) is the Thai equivalent of "oink" for a pig sound but I want to have the spelling right. The "official" sounds for other animals would be great too. Thanks.

There's also this one from Learningthai.com

http://www.learningthai.com/animal_sounds.htm

I'm wondering if Thai distinguishes the different dog sounds as English does:

bark-bark
bow-wow
woof-woof
arf-arf
yap-yap

(as well as howl and whine)

Is เห่า only the act of howling, or is it also the sound of howling? (Is the tone correct? I had an argument with my wife over this one.)

We have a Thai children's book where the dog says "บอกๆ โฮ่งๆ" so it seems like there are at least two.

I came upon another animal sound today; หง่าวๆ

Anyone take a guess on which animal it belongs to?

The first link that Khun Simon linked is a list of what you would call the way different animals make sound. If you are looking for onomatopoeia, this isn't it. The second link that Khun Jariya linked is a list of onomatopoeia.

เห่า is actually barking. หอน is what you want to use for howling. As to how to spell the sound of howling, i forgot.

Khun Simon, I think that one is a cat, not a common one I don't think.
