Using Thai on the Apple Mac

Postby Glenn Slayden » Mon Sep 09, 2002 9:56 pm

I have many people contact me with various problems displaying Thai on the Macintosh. Unfortunately, I don't own a Mac and I'm not familiar with its OS so I can't help these people. If anyone has any helpful hints on using Thai on the Mac, please post them here.

Thanks,

Glenn

Using Thai on the Apple Mac

Postby foureyes » Mon Sep 09, 2002 11:10 pm

I don't know anything about the Mac, but I Googled it and came up with a few things...

http://www.dcothai.com/software/mac.htm
http://beum.free.fr/thai/th_mac_contenu.htm (I can't read Thai yet, but I think there may be some info here)
http://www.sanook.com/thaifont/thaifont_mac.shtml

There's a lot of other info out there. Just Google it and you'll find lots of stuff.

Using Thai on the Apple Mac

I own a few macs and have a Thai wife. I have spent hours working on this issue. If anyone has any questions please email me at Image (leave out the _nospam_ part. Its there to keep spam search crawlers from finding my email and sending me junk). I will be glad to offer any assistance.

Using Thai on the Apple Mac

Postby fwheby » Sat Aug 30, 2003 5:20 pm

I have not seen it mentioned here that Apple's own web browser, Safari, is really good for accessing and displaying websites containing Thai fonts. In thai-language.com, for example, everything displays perfectly.

I've tried to get IE to display Thai fonts; even though Thai is built in on Apple's OSX, Thai is not displayed on IE (or on MS Word either) without additional font installations, which I've not yet succeeded in accomplishing.

Also, for email, Apple's Mail program sends and receives Thai fonts unfailingly perfectly.

Finally, while in Thialand a few months ago, I bought a USB keyboard in a PC shop. The cost was only 500 bhat, or about US$12. When I plugged it in, I found that it worked perfectly -- just like a Mac keyboard. When you would use the "Apple" key on a Mac keyboard, simply use the "Windows" key on the PC board. The computer seems not to know the difference.

Hope this is helpful to someone.
