I just had a look at เอา in the Mary Haas dictionary. It is very instructive as it contains compounds and idioms, even though the compounds would normally appear elsewhere in the dictionary (their initial constants are not "o ang").

Thanks again everyone!
Just to update all those Mac users. I didn't have any luck using the Windows programs on my Mac using Wine (a program that lets you run .exe files on a Mac), but I imagine it would work if you have Parallels, etc.

Such a pity that there aren't any options out there for Macs. If only I could download the Longdo dictionary.
Be well,
Marc

Well, you could have downloaded the Mary Haase dictionary, but it's your choice.

@pensive
I did download the Mary Haas .pdf, but it seemed like there was a debate on whether or not the Mary Haas dictionary is still useful these days. I still use it (along with a couple other resources), however, I was looking for something like a program or a searchable pdf (not just scans/photos of pages). Better than nothing, but not exactly what I was looking for.

As far as a Thai-Thai dictionary program that can be used on a Mac - I still haven't found one.

This was really informative as I was thinking there are no options to get a Thai directory working with Mac OS. I am a beginner in program industry and one of my friends who give Thai tuition's was asking about the same thing where I was telling him it is not possible. Anyway I will pass this information to that guy so that he can get more students.

Thanks

I'm a new user interested in this old thread—does anyone have new advice for downloading/using offline the Royal Institute Dictionary on a Mac?

I've tried a couple of pieces of website-eating software (Deep Vacuum and something else—Site sucker now costs ...) but they both say there is an internal error with the RID site and they can't download it. My attempts at downloading other Thai dictionary sites have left me confused—maybe they are too big and complicated?—and besides, I am really only interested in the RID definitions. The OP's suggestion of using the Thai wiktionary offline looks promising, but some definitions go off the RID script, so I'm hesitant.

Can anyone help out with this? Has anyone been successful doing it on Windows? Oh it would be great to have.

You can download dictionary data from NECTEC's Lexitron at

Note that you have to sign in as a member first; there is no cost.

Also, Nowadays, if you have Mac OS Yosemite, there is a Thai Thai dictionary from Oxford in the built-in Dictionary application.
